Navigating Missionaries' Mental Health: Tools to Advocate for Compassionate Care and Effective Conversations

  • Breakout Session
  • MG Meeting Rooms Gulfstream 2
  • November 21 2025 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Talking about mental health—especially within the church—has often been uncomfortable and avoided. Missionaries, in particular, face unique mental health challenges due to stigma, spiritual misconceptions, and the stress of cross-cultural living. This workshop aims to equip church members, leaders, caregivers, professionals, and missionaries with a deeper understanding of these issues. Participants will gain practical tools to engage in sensitive conversations around mental health in missions. The session will also provide strategies for recognizing and supporting mental health needs in themselves and others. A biblical perspective on mental health will be explored to help integrate faith with emotional well-being. Attendees will learn to distinguish between spiritual and psychological struggles and respond accordingly. The workshop emphasizes the importance of access to mental health resources for missionaries, both on the field and during re-entry. Ultimately, it promotes a church and missions culture that supports openness, compassion, and care.
